Spring: March to May

Spring is one of the most beautiful times to get married in Portugal.

The landscapes begin to turn green, flowers are in bloom, and the days gradually become longer and warmer. Compared with the height of summer, temperatures are generally more comfortable for outdoor ceremonies and long afternoons of photographs.

March

March marks the beginning of spring, although the weather can still be unpredictable. You can expect a mixture of sunny days and occasional rain, particularly earlier in the month.

For couples who love an atmospheric, intimate celebration and don't mind having a weather plan B, March can be a beautiful choice.

The advantage is the light: when the sun appears, it can be incredibly soft and luminous.

April

April brings more of that unmistakable spring feeling to Portugal.

The countryside around Lisbon and Sintra becomes greener, gardens begin to bloom, and the days become noticeably longer. Temperatures are usually comfortable enough for an outdoor ceremony without the intensity of the summer heat.

April is particularly beautiful for weddings surrounded by gardens, vineyards and historic estates.

May

May is one of our favourite months for a Portugal wedding.

The days are longer, temperatures are generally warm without being at their peak, and the landscapes still have much of their spring freshness.

For couples planning an outdoor celebration, May offers a wonderful balance between comfortable temperatures and beautiful natural light.

It is also an excellent month for destination weddings because guests can enjoy Portugal beyond the wedding day — from exploring Lisbon and Sintra to spending time along the coast.

Summer: June to August

Summer is Portugal's classic wedding season.

Long days, almost endless sunshine and warm evenings make June, July and August especially popular for destination weddings.

However, there are differences between these three months — and between regions.

June

If you're looking for long summer evenings without quite as much of the intense midsummer heat, June can be an excellent choice.

The days are incredibly long, which gives couples more time for outdoor celebrations and portraits. Golden hour can also arrive surprisingly late, creating beautiful opportunities for photographs after dinner or during the transition into the evening.

June works particularly well for weddings in Lisbon, Sintra and along the coast.

July

July is one of the warmest and driest months of the year.

For couples dreaming of an unmistakably Mediterranean wedding, July delivers plenty of sunshine and warm evenings.

That said, temperatures can become high, particularly inland and in southern Portugal. If you're planning a July wedding, we recommend thinking carefully about ceremony timing, shade and guest comfort.

An earlier ceremony or a late-afternoon start can make a significant difference.

August

August is the heart of summer — and traditionally one of the busiest months for holidays in Portugal.

The weather is generally hot and dry, with long sunny days and warm evenings. Coastal locations can benefit from the Atlantic breeze, while inland venues can feel considerably warmer.

August can be particularly beautiful for relaxed, outdoor celebrations with a Mediterranean atmosphere.

If you're considering August, we recommend booking your venue and key suppliers well in advance.

Early Autumn: September and October

For many couples, September and October offer the best balance for a Portugal destination wedding.

The intense summer heat begins to soften, while the days remain relatively long and outdoor celebrations are still very much possible.

September

September is one of our favourite months to photograph weddings in Portugal.

The light becomes slightly softer, evenings remain warm, and temperatures are often more comfortable than during the peak of summer.

The combination of warm days and golden late-afternoon light makes September particularly beautiful for outdoor ceremonies and portraits.

For couples coming from abroad, September also offers the feeling of summer without quite the intensity of July or August.

October

October brings a more atmospheric quality to Portugal.

Temperatures become milder and the days shorter, but there can still be beautiful sunny days — especially earlier in the month.

In wine regions such as the Douro Valley, October can be especially special as the landscape takes on the feeling of harvest season.

For a more intimate, romantic and slightly moodier celebration, October can be a wonderful choice.

As always with autumn weddings, we recommend having an indoor or covered option available in case of rain.

Winter: November to February

Winter is often overlooked when couples start planning a destination wedding in Portugal.

But there is something incredibly special about a winter celebration here.

Portugal's winters are generally much milder than those in many other European destinations. While rain is more likely and temperatures are cooler, sunny winter days can be surprisingly beautiful.

November

November brings shorter days, cooler temperatures and a greater possibility of rain.

But for couples drawn to intimate celebrations, historic interiors and atmospheric photographs, it can work beautifully.

Think candlelight, old stone walls, fireplaces, long dinners and a slower pace.

December

December weddings can be particularly magical around Lisbon and Sintra.

Historic palaces and estates take on a completely different atmosphere during the winter months, and an intimate dinner surrounded by candlelight can feel incredibly romantic.

Just remember that sunset comes much earlier, so the timing of your ceremony and portraits becomes more important.

January and February

January and February are generally among the coolest months of the year.

They are also quieter, which can make them interesting for couples who want a more intimate celebration and are comfortable embracing the possibility of winter weather.

For these months, we would recommend choosing a venue with beautiful indoor spaces so that the architecture and atmosphere remain part of the experience regardless of the weather.

For destination weddings, we recommend building your timeline around the light rather than treating photography as something that simply happens between events.
